Rotary Projects - Dictionary Project

The Dictionary Project is an effort to improve literacy and the quality of life in students within our community.  The goal of the project is to assist students in completing the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers by providing them with their own personal dictionaries.

The dictionaries are given as a gift by the Paso Robles Rotary Club to each 3rd grade student to use at school and at home for years to come.

A dictionary is perhaps the first and most powerful reference tool that a child should own. Its usefulness goes beyond spelling, pronunciations and definitions. It is a companion for solving problems that arise as a child develops his or her reading, writing, and creative thinking abilities.

It is the spell checker we all used before the computer was invented.   Dictionaries provide an opportunity for children to expand their vocabulary and build their reading skills.

2007 was the third year, the Paso Robles Rotary Club was proud to be involved with this project.  This year we provided dictionaries to 318 3rd grade students at Bauer Speck, Pat Butler, Georgia Brown., Trinity Lutheran, St. Rose & Pleasant Valley.

Rotarians who helped were Julie Opheim (Chairman), Linda Midkiff, Deanna Delkener, Doug Barth & Vicki Silva.
